Trading card games

 

Trading card games (TCG) are also called collectible card games. Specially designed sets of cards are used to play them. The trading card games mix the appeal of collecting and strategic game play. The first trading card game was produced by The Allegheny Card Co. This was called The Base Ball Card Game and was registered on 5th April 1904. The modern concept of trading card games was presented in 1993. This was called as Magic: The Gathering. This was designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast.

 

Playing the game

 

Every TCG has a basic set of rules that portray the categories of cards used in the game, the mode of interaction of the cards and the aims of the players. Every card has additional text that explains the particular effect of the card on the game. The card also indicates the particular element obtained from the game’s genre, setting or source material. The cards are named for such source elements. The card’s game function may relate to the subject. An example is the Magic game. As this is based on fantasy, many cards indicate creatures and magical spells. In this game, a dragon is shown as a reptilian beast. Also, this may have flying ability and menacing game statistics when compared to small creatures. Many TCGs are created around a resource system by which the speed of the game is controlled. Often, the cards in the player’s deck are themselves a resource. The frequency of cards moving from the deck to the play region or player’s hand is tightly monitored. Relative card strength is frequently determined by the number or type of basic resources required to play the card. After this, the pacing is decided by the flow of cards moving in and out of play.

 

Comparison with traditional card games

 

In traditional card games like poker or UNO, the deck’s content is limited and pre-determined. In direct contrast, in a TCG, the players choose the cards from the pool of cards to form their deck. Due to this, a TCG player can customize their deck so that there are favorable card interactions, combinations and statistics.

 

Typical Steps

 

While playing, players take turns playing cards and performing game-related actions. The restore step makes all in-play cards ready for the upcoming turn. The draw card step is essential to circulate the cards in the player’s hands. The play card step is to use the cards in hand to interact with the game. The conflict step is the main method for triumph in most games. The discard card step is to discard for a maximum hand size or to refresh for the next turn.

 

Online play

 

While playing on the Internet, there exists a virtual collection rather than physical cards. This collection is a set of data stored on the server. The cards can be bought using real money or traded in the environment. The first online TCGs were Sanctum and Chron X. Both of these were developed in 1997. Chron X was created by Genetic Anomalies Inc. This game led to the development of other online TCGs.
